Chapter 10

Patience slapped her phone down on the table. Frustrated.

“I’m guessing that call didn’t go well,” Tuck said, not even turning around from where he stood at the sink, washing dishes. Something he seemed to do a lot of and never complained about.

She appreciated that.

“That’s correct,” she said. Her voice flat. Her mind whirling. She’d been so happy to help Chris and his kids. It had been so much fun to go out and play in the snow. Something she hadn’t done for a really long time. Just hadn’t taken the time. Plus, she didn’t have anyone to do it with. Who better to play in snow with than children, right?

But that had been last week, and she had been swamped with work since then. Baking, delivering, and paperwork that she needed to catch up on.

There hadn’t been quite enough money to pay all her bills because of back taxes that were owed, which had been bad enough, but then there was that call from her lawyer.

“He can’t get the money?” Tuck asked. He knew she’d been expecting a call since she’d filled out an email form with information for her lawyer which she’d sent a couple of days ago.

“No. And Dave is now claiming he’s disabled. Which I don’t know whether is true or not, but it does seem a little suspicious since he’s filing a motion to have the judgment against him dismissed because he can’t work to pay it.”

Regardless of whether the motion was successful or not, it would mean just that much more of a delay in her ever having a hope of getting any money.

“That stinks.”

“I know. I’m frustrated, but I also wasn’t really expecting to see it, so I’m not extremely upset, just bummed. It always seems so unfair when people get away with stuff. It’s like they think God doesn’t care or almost that He’ll reward their evil. Here I am working my butt off, still, and not seeing anything from it.”

“Anything?” he prompted her, and her fingers stilled from where she was idly spinning her phone on the table.

“That’s one of the things I really like about having you around. You don’t put up with my bull, and you question my stupid statements.”

“Meaning?” he prompted again.

“Have you ever considered being a psychologist?” she said, only half joking.

“Not until a week ago when you left me alone in the kitchen with Chris, somehow thinking that I was magically going to have something to say to him.”

“You always have wise things to say. Even when you were a kid running around goofing off, you had wisdom I didn’t understand.”

“I think you’re changing the subject. On purpose?” He rinsed out the dishcloth and put it on the counter.

She sighed. “No. I guess I just don’t know what to say. I know that this is a trial I need to go through. And I need to be looking for the lessons. And God is in control, and whatever He’s doing is for my good. But...it’s just so frustrating when the bad guys always seem to win.
